Now let me start by saying that I’m a supporter of Rob Ford. I believe that in regards to what he’s been trying to do down at City Hall he has been on the right track, he came into office pledging to reduce spending while attempting to reduce our taxes both of which he has done well and it has not left the city in dire straits swinging from financial crisis to crisis.
But even before he came into office, Rob Ford had been at the center of a concerted attack from left leaning councillors and organizations (unions and media alike)
Gas Plants and Voters Apathy…
So on Tuesday morning the former premier of Ontario came before the justice committee to explain his role in the Gas Plant cancellations in Mississauga and Oakville and true McGuinty fashion he pulled out his snake oil and was selling it as only he can.
He said (and I’m paraphrasing here)
You can’t outsmart the truth… we made a mistake placing the plants there in the first place
We made this decision to late and we regret that…
And the line of the day…
We did it for the children!!!
More like you did it to save your sorry self.
But of all the answers McGuinty gave, what was the most telling testimony of the day was his answer about what he knew the cost estimates were when he made the final decision to cancel the project, and with all the sincerity that he could muster Mr. McGuinty said this:
“I didn’t know what the cost were going to be to close the plants when I made the decision.”
Wow!!! That confession is by far the most outrageous thing that he has ever said.
So in plain English he is saying that he placed a gas plant around hospitals, homes & children (which he says was a mistake), then took 5 years to figure out that it was a bad decision and only when it was going to bite him in the butt politically he had an epiphany that these plants had to be cancelled immediately no matter the cost.
So instead of finding out the best way out of a bad decision by taking the time to get it right, McGuinty did what he figured would secure him an election and announced the cancellations and put them in a terrible bargaining position.
McGuinty and his cabinet played with house money for election votes and we lost our shirts.
So how do we as a voting public respond, how do we decide to hold them accountable?
60% of Ontarians polled say they don’t want an election.
60%… even though close to 70% of people polled think that this same Liberal government is corrupt.
What is wrong with us!!!
When the bankers on Wall Street took outrageous bets with the public’s money, a large majority of the people rose up and demanded for someone to be held accountable, and rightfully so but when this Liberal government that you elected does virtually the same thing and you bend over and ask for more.
This level of Apathy to this complete and utter theft of our money for the purpose of winning a few seats is disgusting. To make matters worse this isn’t their first go around with this kind of gross mismanagement and we as a voting public keep giving them the key to the vault.
THEY ARE ROBBING US BLIND AND RUBBING IT IN OUR FACES.
The Liberals have been rubbing it in our faces for the last few weeks. Chief of those is the current energy minister Bob Chiarelli, Mr. Chiarelli to got up in the legislature last week and insist that if the opposition wanted the numbers on the cost they should have “Done their homework”. This type of response smacks of a government that feels they don’t answer to anyone.
Wrong again Bob…
You and your government should have known, before you cancelled the plants what the cost were going to be
Bob, your party should have reported that cost to the people who put your sorry asses in office.
Most Importantly Bob, your party and in particular your former Leader Dalton McGuinty should have, regardless of whether it was politically advantageous or not, taken the extra time to do it right, because that’s what good government is supposed to do.
So what is going to take you people to get active?
What will it take you people to kick politicians like McGuinty, Chiarelli and Wynne out on their backsides?
“The Liberals have not learned any lessons from various scandals such as e-Health and the cancelled gas plants in Mississauga. The budget does not “rebuild trust with the public,”
And with that Andrea Horwath has decided to prop up the Liberal government of Ontario…
Yes the same woman who said “You are Corrupt” about this Liberal government yesterday morning is about to reward its “Corruption” with more time in office.
Now you might say
How do you know that she will vote for this budget?
Isn’t that hypocrisy?
Why would she do that?
We know she will prop them up because she alluded to it after the budget was released
“We want to see them meet some of these targets, like on auto insurance it needs to be done in one year not one and a half… and we’re going to hold them to that”
No one who is thinking about toppling a government worries about holding them to doing anything because you would have removed them from office already. Andrea Horwath ploy of needing time for voter consultation is just that a poly, because as she said herself “They got more than they asked for”. She doesn’t want to seem hypocritical in proping up a government she has already confessed is corrupt”
Ontarians have made it quite clear that they don’t believe in this Liberal government no matter how they feel about Ms. Wynne. They are asking for change even if they don’t know who they want instead.
But the bigger question is why will she prop up a government she insists is corrupt.
The answer is likely one of these reasons.
She either thinks she can use Ms. Wynne as a puppet;
she believes she won’t win in an election or;
She doesn’t believe that the Liberal government did anything wrong.
My guess is its all of the above.
By proping them up on condition of following through you hold what I like to call “Worthless leverage”. It’s worthless because if government continues its track record of broken promises then the people will not only dislike Ms. Wynne for not following through but they will turn on Ms. Horwath for wasting time in getting the change we want. Now if the Liberals do achieve some level of competence in the time she gives them, people will begin to forgive the last 9 years of ineptitude. Voters especially in Ontario, tend to have short political memories as evidence by McGuinty’s last electoral “Victory”. Either way this doesn’t end well for the NDP.
Not that triggering an election would work right now for her anyways as all trends tend to point to another minority government but for either the Liberals or the PC’s with the NDP on the outside looking in. But ultimately she will prop up this government because all in all Ms Horwath is a Liberal wearing an orange jacket. Her recent turn about in regards to fiscal responsibility has been purely politics and not ideological. She is no more of a budget hawk than Ms. Wynne, she has been in favour of many of the Liberal tax increases before, railed against many of the tax cuts that corporations have received and championed many of the boondoggles before they became a hazard. She was against reforms to public sector wages and entitlements even when the Liberals were in favour of them. So at every turn Ms. Horwath has shown that she will talk like a populist but govern like any other Liberal.
So when Andrea Horwath fails to bring down the Liberals , she will have failed Ontario.
